What Goes Best With A Subway Sandwich and A Frozen Treat From TCBY?

Corporate Safe Specialists' Advanced Cash Control System -of course!

The largest submarine sandwich franchise in the world with nearly 17,500 individually owned restaurants in 74 countries has been providing entrepreneurs with the means to build and succeed in their own business for 37 years. TCBY, otherwise known as The Country's Best Yogurt was founded in 1981 by Frank D. Hickingbotham (no kidding), and now has well over 3,000 locations worldwide. In 1997 Subway and TCBY established a co-branding alliance in the US and Canada that resulted in the marriage of these two stores in many locations. Lucien Saint Cyr, Owner and Operator of a Subway/TCBY Store in Huntington, New York took the time to answer some questions about the security at his store, specifically his money handling system.

EH - Can you tell us a little about your business and what is behind your choice of a money handling product?

LSC - The TCBY has been operating here for 14 years and the Subway addition, which shares the same location, opened this January. The new store needed a safe and we wanted one that would dispense change to minimize trips to the banks and avoid shortages. Corporate Safe's Advanced Cash Control System (ACCS) was chosen after considering several options.

EH - What was unique about the Corporate Safe Specialists (CSS) product?

LSC - The ACCS is a touch screen information safe that has the functionality to be fully integrated into existing IT networks and structures. I guess you could call it an "intelligent safe" because it does a lot more than just store money.

It has all the features I was looking for including coin dispenser, familiar Windows® based operation of functions such as dipstick, video recording of transactions and time delay. I also determined that Corporate Safe had the customer service I wanted.

EH - A dipstick?

LSC - It's a system that allows for on-line coin management. You have to understand that for anyone operating a fast food store of any kind, time is money. Corporate Safe Specialists have developed a coin management system that monitors a stores coin usage and makes coin quantity information available remotely. This means when the system gets low, I get an e-mail to let me know they are almost out of change. The information can also be sent to my PDA or other wireless devise. By having this information before the change runs out, sensible planning can be made for what could otherwise be a time consuming bank run.

EH - What about the video recording feature you mentioned, what does that do for you?

LSC - The ability to remotely review safe activity allows you to examine the efficiency of your money handling operation any time you want. Recorded images can also be valuable forensic evidence which may mean the difference between recovering a cash loss or avoiding a wrongful arrest lawsuit. To my knowledge, this is the first safe audit that incorporates video compression.

EH - How does the system in place work? What does it do?

LSC - The system allows an employee to drop money frequently and to dispense change when necessary without any hassles. It saves time with quick, easy coin loading and reporting which means the employees are quickly back to work helping customers not spending time trying to get the system to work.

EH - What about the security aspects?

LSC - There is an access control system with the safe. Each employee has their own password and can only perform specified functions. Additionally, we have a central alarm system and a CCTV system is scheduled for installation soon.

The time delay feature gives an added level of security.

EH - When was the system installed?

LSC - February, 2003

EH - Who did the installation and how long was process?

LSC - Corporate Safe did the installation and the entire process took about three hours.

EH - Were there any special problems or challenges with the installation process?

LSC - No, it was a smooth process with no problems.

EH - What would you tell others to look for when considering similar products for similar applications?

LSC - Prompt customer service and user friendly products are more valuable than you can imagine. It goes back to that "time is money" issue. When you're ready to open your doors for business you surely don't want any delay in essential product shipment and installation. And if there is a service problem, they better be able to handle it right away.

EH - Are there any plans for expansion of systems at this or nother location?

LSC - At the present time, one system is adequate for the needs of this store but I would definitely install this system in my next location.
